Not Your Ordinary Book Stand

Made this to display a book of the dead or other reading material. I felt that a skull made this particular stand come together.

Here's a new skull I finished up.  This guy has a chipped tooth and a nasty underbite. Left lots of exposed skull showing on his scalp.

A Work of Art

My friend Pete from The Devil's Workshop made this one of a kind scarecrow. These photos were taken while it was on display at an Illinois art gallery. Simply amazing.

Forsaken

A while ago I came across an amazing scarecrow drawing on Deviantart. I knew I had to make a scarecrow like it. Here's the drawing that inspired me by artist Clearharm.




















Below is my completed version called Forsaken. My intention was to build him as he looks in the drawing. However as my work on him progressed, it started to go in a slightly different direction. I'm very pleased with the end result.
I braved the elements and snapped some shots near our neighbor's farmfield. Of course I had to take pictures on one of the coldest days of the year with a biting northerly wind. Nearly got frostbite for my efforts but it was well worth it.

Welcome to Silent Hill

Ever since I saw Silent Hill, I wanted to replicate the city welcome sign shown in the movie. I liked the neglected appearance of the sign; how the paint was aged and cracked and how falling ash from the burning underground coal had settled on it over the years.

In order to achieve part of this cracked look I needed to use a crackle glaze. For my first time experimenting with this it was pretty easy to work with. I found out quickly that when working with this stuff, speed is your friend. The glaze has to be painted over very quickly with paint or you can botch the whole thing. When painting over the glaze the cracks appear before your eyes, but don't try to brush back over an area you did already or you'll destroy the cracked look. Smaller or bigger cracks can be made depending on how much glaze and paint you apply.

I finished this book stand yesterday. The next one I make I want to have more exposed bone and some extra flesh hanging down.

This is a book stand I'm making that a customer ordered. I've painted a base coat and need to do some finishing yet. I haven't made anything since Halloween and am glad to be working on a prop again.
